Here it is. My first top ten! I know it's a Sunday and so it doesn't really count, but I've been blinging out my blog anyway and I feel inspired. So, since I'm back in England I thought I should do an England-related list, here is my...
Top Ten Things I Love About England!
1. My family.
We're all in the same place in the same time (finally), so being able to hang out with my parents, brothers, cousins and everyone at any given moment is fantastic. Here's a photo of (most) of us this morning at Frankie and Benny's for breakfast:
2. Night-time telly.
We have THE best evening television in the world, and most of it consists of news-related comedic game shows and stand-up routines. My absolute favourite is Mock the Week. It's like having six Jon Stewarts in one show!
3. The Premier League.
4. The scrap iron guy.
This is a guy who drives around in a van with a megaphone shouting, "Any old scrap iiiiiiiiiron?" And if you have an old washing machine or a broken toaster or anything metal to throw away, you run out and he stops and he'll take it away to be recycled. It started sometime during the War and it's been going ever since.
5. Food.
People tend to generalise about how bad British food is, but I love it and I think they don't know what they're talking about. The fish n'chips and shepherd's pie and curry is great, obviously, but then you've got things like sausage and mashed potato and peas and Sunday roast dinners with Yorkshire pudding and gravy. And Trifle. Oh my god.
6. English mentality.
It's hard to explain, but there's something inherently ordinary about England, and it's really refreshing. For the most part people tend to be down to earth and grounded, and while sometimes it can come across as miserable or unambitious or dissatisfied, it usually comes across as realistic and contented, and it's where the British resolve and sense of humour comes from.
